This is our home away from home at the JAARS Center near Waxhaw, NC. We usually spend some time in the spring and the fall doing volunteer work at JAARS (a Wycliffe Bible translators support organization). JAARS stands for Jungle Aviation And Radio Service, the radio service part is not used much anymore with the advance of computers. The JAARS center does quite a bit of training for new pilot/mechanics before they go out into the field all over the world. I help with the aircraft maintenance performed on those training aircraft as well as other aircraft that are maintained by JAARS to raise money to buy new aircraft. JAARS became an official repair station for the Robinson R-44 helicopter and during our stay this time I have worked on 3 different customer R-44 helicopters. This was something new for me and quite educational.
This is one of the customer helicopters we are doing an annual inspection on. You can see the yellow float that was unwrapped at that time. Part of the inspection was blowing the floats up to check for leaks and than repacking them. The floats are used for emergency landing on water and not all R-44's have them.
